Calgary’s 2019 Home Renovation and Building Trends
Every new year brings new products, design ideas and updates. It’s fun to keep up with what’s new and hot. However, in Calgary, specific trends stick and others flop due to our climate and lifestyle, so it’s important to know what works and what doesn’t.
Here’s what I see coming on strong in our market for 2019 – new styles and updates that make sense for where and how we live here in Calgary.
- Bungalow Style
In a recent blog, The Rise of the Humble Bungalow, I wrote that I’d share more in coming weeks on the appeal of the bungalow. I think these homes connect with Albertans on an emotional level as within a bungalow we can create sweeping open spaces, similar to our skies and surrounding prairies. We’re used to space. That means when looking to buy, build, or renovate, you might want to search beyond the boundaries of the inner-city where lots are smaller. Instead, look to the areas that were built in the 1950s, ‘60s and ‘70s. You’ll find larger lots great for renovating or building new. - Blurred Lines between Home and Office
More and more Calgarians are starting home businesses, working as outside contractors or making arrangements with employers to work from home a few days a week. The trend of working remotely makes for the blurring of live-work boundaries and is creating a need for work spaces in the home, whether it’s a dedicated home office, or finding the right nook to create an office-like environment. - Fiery Nights
Whether they are found indoors or outdoors, fireplaces are a must have for 2019 after most of North America endured cooler temperatures than usual over the last few months. Here in Calgary, a fireplace also serves as a focal point on a dark and stormy night, warming our hearts and bodies. Choosing the right look can transform a home’s living space and add interest through a gorgeous mantel, natural stone accents, or with sleek modern concrete. - The Golden Age
2019 is setting up to be a year where we firmly wave goodbye to stainless steel and polished nickel and welcome gold and brass accents back into our homes. Brass is a surprisingly warm and subtle alternative to the expected steel accents. But we’re not talking about your grandmother’s ‘80s brass. Gold fixtures and brass are more beautiful these days because the finishes are brushed and more understated. The quiet, golden tone of brushed brass commands more respect than the loud, shiny brass of before. The new finish provides an element of warmth and sophistication in a home. - Here Comes the Sun
A trend that began last year is stronger than ever after we’ve all been trapped inside over recent months. We’re filling our family rooms and kitchens with large windows, big skylights, and sunshine as we seek to soak up as much Vitamin D as possible during long cold winters. Building elements such as hardwood or stone for the floor, brick accents and lots of indoor plants further enhance this natural trend and help create an indoor sanctuary all winter long.
