Here comes summer – we hope!

As witnessed this weekend, we never know how long the good weather will stick around here in Calgary, but the warmer, sunnier days that came before had many of our clients jumping into spring cleaning mode.

While spring tends to bring out the desire to nest and make all things pretty, it’s good to be sure your home improvements are equal parts form and function. The projects I’ve outlined here will help improve your home’s look and value, while providing cost savings and more usable space.

Up on the Rooftops

Winter can wreak havoc on your roof, so spring’s the time to assess any potential damage. Check your shingles for signs of wear and ensure your gutters and downspouts are free of leaves and branches. Pebbles or shiny granules after a rainstorm might mean your shingles are approaching the end of their life span.

Ensure You’re Energy Efficient

Our homeowners are always surprised at how much energy their homes leak on a daily basis – it’s like watching money fly out the window. Cracked caulking, old windows, doors that no longer seal well, these all lead to higher energy bills. Improve your home’s energy efficiency by having windows replaced or re-caulked, ensure your insulation in the attic is sufficient, and think about replacing old doors with newer, better units.

Pump Up the Light

Over the last decade grey tones have been wildly popular. Trends are now moving to paint that reflects sunshine and brightens up the home. So what better time than spring to cast aside the grey. Give your home a refreshed look by using paint or wallpaper in light, bright shades. Adding new art work or window treatments are other great ways of using colour to brighten up your home.

Get Decked Out

Are you dreaming of a great outdoor space to gather friends and family on warm summer nights? There’s no better time than spring to develop your yard, build a deck (or rebuild an old one), or put in the perfect patio. Create a space that you’ll use well into the autumn months, ensuring there’s room for a summer cookout or a cozy bonfire when the temperatures dip. Building a deck can improve your home’s value and add additional livable space in your home, all for a relatively modest cost.

Give Your Kitchen a Facelift

Summer time means entertaining moves to the patio or even the cottage, so warmer months are the best time for a kitchen update. Keep in mind that a full renovation is not always needed to get more enjoyment out of your kitchen space.  A new backsplash and countertops make a big difference. Or take it a step further by refacing older cabinets and updating hardware. Of course, if you’re looking for the full kitchen renovation, barbeque season is the best time to set up outdoors and let us work our magic inside.

Add Custom Storage

As you are doing some spring cleaning, you may find the need for a better system to organize and store your items. If you have a garage or a storage room in your home, taking the time to renovate the space and build custom storage for your needs can make a huge difference.  Maximizing the space will allow for more organization, more storage and help you keep your main living areas free and clear.
