Explore Calgary’s prime inner-city neighbourhoods

Last month, I wrote about a few of my favourite Calgary neighbourhoods for families looking to build or renovate the home of their dreams.

Today I’m adding to the list with three more south-central family-friendly communities.

I tend to live, work and serve clients in these areas as they are close to downtown, allow for fabulous renovations that will only increase in value over the years, and provide some great building lots for those wishing to develop their dream home from scratch.

  1. Mayfair Bel-Aire

One of Calgary’s most intimate neighbourhoods is nestled along the Elbow River and Glenmore Reservoir offering residents stunning views and access to incredible recreational amenities.

Within the community are two modern playgrounds, two private tennis courts, an outdoor ice skating rink, outdoor fitness equipment and the unique Participatory Art Wall located at the newly renovated Mayfair Bel-Aire Recreation Lane which features two giant chalkboards where neighbours are encouraged to express and share.

Mayfair Bel-AIre also boasts immediate proximity to a number of major southwest Calgary destinations, including the Chinook Mall, Britannia Shopping Centre, Heritage Park, The Calgary Golf and Country Club, Earl Grey Golf Course, Rocky View Hospital, Glenmore Reservoir and numerous private and public schools.

In this gorgeous inner-city community, we often help families renovate mid century houses into enchanting homes with modern updates, and we’ve built new homes for those who want to bring their own dreams to life. Learn more about Mayfair Bel-Aire by visiting the community league page here.

  2. Britannia

The exclusive enclave of Britannia was developed as a cutting-edge community in the 1950s. A central park, roads that flow with the natural landscape and enviable amenities have made Britannia one of Calgary’s most notable neighbourhoods. In fact, the revolutionary design of this community inspired a visit from Queen Elizabeth herself in 1959.

One of the biggest selling points for Britannia is the quaint shopping plaza with its angled parking and local shops that looks like an early 20th century prairie Main Street. Adjacent to the Calgary Country Club, the plaza is surrounded by tasteful condos and apartments that add density and character for those wanting options as they age. As well, the plaza is across the street from a luxury seniors care centre.

Britannia is known for large lots and diversity of homes, making it an ideal community to design and build a dream home.

  3. Mount Royal

Calgary’s Grand Dame neighbourhood, Mount Royal is a showcase community for stunning century homes. Most of the houses in the area were constructed during Calgary’s 1910-1912 building boom when Mount Royal gained its reputation as an exclusive residential district. It was the home of many of Calgary’s elite, including Colonel James Macleod and the A.E. Cross family.

Many of Calgary’s families are drawn to the unique community as these gorgeous estate homes sit on large, well-treed lots allowing for incomparable inner-city privacy. Yet, the neighbourhood is perched on the edge of 17th Avenue, allowing walkable access to all of the best restaurants, cafés and shops that urban Calgary has to offer.

At AWC, we have been called in to renovate and modernize many homes in Mount Royal and to build new. Check out one of our recent renovations here and a new build here. Learn more about Mount Royal by visiting the community league page here.
